Assignment 2

Case Study:

Personality types are the different types of the human behaviour, self-consciousness, courage and other traits which divide people into the special groups and categories possessing the common features. It is obvious that everyone is a unique personality with the unique appearance and inner world, but is has been proved that there are certain definite types of personality with which everyone can associate himself. It is obvious that personality types is quite a complicated and abstract topic, no wonder there are many theories which try to explain this issue in the appropriate way. The most common understanding of the types of personality is the division of people into the two main categories: introverts and extraverts. There are four main temperaments every of which possesses its own characteristics, strong and weak sides: sanguine, phlegmatic, choleric and melancholic. The first three types are supposed to be the strong types and the last melancholic type is understood as the weak type of the personality.Personality types is an interesting topic for the research, because the student learns about the psychological and behavioural differences between people and understands the cause of these differences.

Assignment 2

Case Study

Leadership is the ability of an individual or a group of individuals to influence and guide followers or other members of an organization. Leadership involves making sound — and sometimes difficult — decisions, creating and articulating a clear vision, establishing achievable goals and providing followers with the knowledge and tools necessary to achieve those goals.Leaders are found and required in most aspects of society, from business to politics to region to community-based organizations.

An effective leader possess the following characteristics: self-confidence, strong communication and management skills, creative and innovative thinking, perseverance in the face of failure, willingness to take risks, openness to change, and levelheadedness and reactiveness in times of crisis. In business, individuals who exhibit these leadership qualities can ascend to executive management or C-level positions, such as CEO, CIO or president. Noteworthy individuals who have exhibited strong leadership in the technology industry include Apple founder Steve Jobs, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. What makes a great leader? Multiple definitions of leadership exist, although the different definitions generally converge in the theory that great leaders have the ability to make strategic and visionary decisions and convince others to follow those decisions. The consensus is leaders create a vision and can successfully get others to work toward achieving that goal. They do this by setting direction and inspiring others to want to succeed in achieving the end result. Moreover, they are capable of getting people excited and motivated to work toward the vision. In other words, great leaders know how to both inspire people and get followers to complete the tasks that achieve the leader’s goal. Although the terms leadership and management are sometimes used interchangeably, they are not the same concept. As previously stated, leadership involves creating and articulating a vision and inspiring others to want to work toward that vision. But leaders may not be skilled at or involved with the day-to-day management of the work needed to turn that vision into a reality. Management, on the other hand, is the oversight of the tactical steps required to complete the work needed to actually achieve the objective.

Leadership often requires leaders to take on some management tasks, but good leaders understand that their strengths are different than those exhibited by good managers who excel in articulating the steps required to complete tasks and holding people accountable for achieving their share of assigned work. Leadership requires individuals to possess certain key traits, such as strong communication skills, charisma, assertiveness and empathy. Many individuals inherently possess some leadership traits, but most individuals have to develop many, if not all, of the characteristics associated with leadership.

There are numerous guidelines, books, classes and consultants aimed at helping individuals develop these traits and, perhaps more importantly, understand which traits are most effective under which circumstances and with which teams. Some people can develop leadership skills through their everyday experiences. Moreover, some people do not hold any positions of authority or business titles, yet still demonstrate leadership through their actions and abilities to rally people to act on their visions for something better than the status quo. So, Based on your understanding of leadership, answer the questions.

Case Study

ABC Ltd. is an Ahmedabad based soaps and detergent company. It has a broad product portfolio, with salt and soda ash to soaps and detergent manufacturing and marketing. The company was established in 1975 and its early operations were small. It adopted a strategy of low pricing and low margins to beat Multinational giants in the same sector. It benefited by operating in small scale sector and thus saved enormously on excise duty that multinationals had to pay for every kilogram of soap/ detergent they produced. It also concentrated on widening its distribution network. Initially, sales pushed mainly through word of mouth and latter on as the products became popular, sales agents/distributors across the country associated with the company and operated on the tiny margins offered by the company, owing to volumes.

The company intelligently uses television as a medium to promote its brands and push sales. In 2007-08, the company’s net sales grew to Rs 3206 crores, 13.5% higher than 2006-07. Its net profit during the same period was Rs. 446 crores, up by 18% from 2006-07. The debt servicing burden was also decreased by 21% to about 36 crore during 2007-08.

The company saves much on its various expenditure heads like staff cost, power and fuel through better operational efficiency and re-engineering. It has already created a brand associated with cheap products. The company also faces intense competition from hundreds of small scale soap makers. Currently, in 2009-10 the company employs a workforce of 14000 and a turnover of around Rs. 3600 crores. Over the years the company has increased its sales volumes through better product mix, focus on R&D, and proper advertising.

As a part of its ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’ ABC Ltd. has ventured into secondary and higher education and runs educational institutions with a determination to serve the society and create a goodwill. Quality education and vocational training is imparted to the needy free of cost. It has also set up old age homes in the state of Gujarat.

Charisma Corporation
Charisma Corporation (CC) has recently embarked on a new kind of training. The corporation is teaching many of its employees, especially those in the marketing and sales to make decisions on the basis of non verbal communication cues. For Malini Varma, VP of CC, focusing on non verbal communications has become an important part of her inter personal dealings. Several years ago, Varma became interested in how body movements and mannerism truly reflect what an individual is saying. Continuously reading in this area of study, Varma has been able to take decisions about potential employees and potential customers by ‘reading’ them. Varma believes that body language can give a person competitive advantage. It can make difference while closing a deal or, as in CC’s case, while hiring employees. For example, during interviews, Malini pays constant attention to the candidate’s eye movements and mannerism. She believes that she can correctly predict if the candidate will be aggressive sales person while simultaneously being personable and friendly. How does she do it? She does this by looking at their eyes and the way they present themselves. In one case hiring decision came down to two people. The first person was animated and made constant eye contact. The second candidate never looked in the eyes of Malini. , leaned back in his/her chair, and crossed both his legs and arms. The first candidate demonstrated the communication skills that Varma thought aligned with successful performance in her organization.
Malini Varma is convinced that communication skills play a significant role in helping her organization achieve its annual sales goals. Personally, she has found that it has helped her ‘quality’ customers. For instance even when a potential customer says,’ yes’ with his/her arms and legs crossed emphatically, it means, No! Understanding this, Varma is in a better position to probe further into the possible objections the customer has. She has found that, in many cases, she is able to steer the conversation in a direction that ultimately leads to successfully closing a sale. And that is a major competitive advantage.

Questions
1. What problems Varma encounter by her heavy reliance on non verbal communication?
2. What communication guidance would you give to Varma and individuals like her who place an inordinately high value on body language? Explain your position.

                                          The Industrial Engineering Change

An industrial engineer, Jayesh was assigned to an electronic assembly department to devise methods of improvement. In one assembly operation he soon recognized that a new fixture might reduce labor cost by about 40%. He discussed the situation with the group leader Rakesh, and then with supervisor, Mukesh. Rakesh was indifferent, but Mukesh was interested in the offer and added certain suggestions to Jayesh’s idea.

Feeling that he had Mukesh’s approval, Jayesh had the fixture made. With the permission of Mukesh, he assigned an assembler (Radha) to try the fixture. She was cooperative and enthusiastic and on very first day exceeded the expected improvement of 40%. When Rakesh was shown the results at the end of the day, he claimed that this was one of the fastest workers in the department and that results could not be generalized for the whole department.

The next day, Jayesh asked Mukesh for another operator to help prove the fixture. At this point, Mukesh noted that the fixture did not include his idea fully. Jayesh explained that he had misunderstood but that he would include his suggestions fully in the next fixture built. Mukesh however continued to be negative about the fixture.

When Jayesh attempted to instruct the other assembler the way he had instructed Radha, her reaction was negative. In fact, when he stopped instructing her, it seemed that she deliberately decreased her speed of work as she used the fixture. She also made some negative comments about the fixture and asked Jayesh if he felt he deserved his pay check for this kind of effort. At the end of the day her productivity was 10% below normal production by the old method.

Q1. Do the SWOT analysis of the group in details

Q2. Review the activities of management for supporting the change. What suggestion you would give to Jayesh to implement this change–effort in organization.

Q3. Why do think Rakesh is indifferent towards Jayesh’s suggestion? Do differing attitudes play a role in it?
